Your Surgery: What to Expect
When you are scheduled for surgery at Spencer Hospital, your surgeon’s office personnel will provide you detailed instructions on how to prepare for your specific procedure. Also, your surgeon’s office staff will assist you in scheduling a pre-surgical physical to assure you are healthy for your procedure. Spencer Hospital’s preadmissions team will contact you a day or two prior to surgery to confirm your arrival and scheduled procedure time, and to answer any questions.
If you are having a same day procedure and will not be admitted overnight to the hospital, please arrange to have a licensed driver over age 18 available to drive you home.
The Day of Surgery
Upon arrival, feel free to use our complimentary valet services available weekdays between 5:30 AM – 5:30 PM, or you may park your own vehicle in our guest lot. Enter the hospital using the main entrance “A”, and the Surgery Center entrance will be close by. You will check in with the surgery registration office located within the Surgery Center. When ready, you will be escorted to your room where your nurse will make sure you are comfortable, and prepared for your procedure.
Your recovery time post-procedure will vary based on the type anesthesia/sedation you received. Depending on the procedure and your personal health, you may be in and out of the hospital in the same day, or you may be admitted for inpatient care.
If you have any other questions about your preparation, your procedure or any other concerns, please contact our preadmissions team at (712) 264-6332 or your doctor’s office. If you must cancel or reschedule your procedure, please call at least 24-36 hours in advance.
Family & Friends
Many patients are accompanied by family members or friends. We seek to ensure that those supporting you are comfortable and informed without disrupting your care. One relative or friend can wait with you in your room while you are being prepared for your procedure. After you are taken to the operating area, your guest can return to the waiting area or visit other public areas of the hospital’s campus. With your permission, the physician will discuss the findings with your family member or friend after the procedure.
The follow amenities are offered for your guests:
- To keep your guests informed, we provide care pagers which can receive messages throughout the hospital campus, including the café, coffee shop and Grand Avenue Park. With this technology, we can send you messages on a disk that is provided, or your guest can provide a cell phone number so our team can contact him or her.
- The patient tracking board provides information on which stage of preparation, surgery or recovery the patient is currently experiencing. For confidentiality, numbers which have been assigned to patients appear on the tracking board.
- A children’s playroom is offered within the surgery waiting area to help occupy time for young guests.
- Complimentary coffee and light refreshments are also available in the waiting area. The café is located on the first floor, a short walk away, as is a coffee shop which serves a variety of beverages and snacks.
If you have questions at any point, please ask us. Good communications and understanding are important elements in your care and healing.
