Helping the Helpers: Strategies for Overcoming Compassion Fatigue in the Healthcare Setting

PURPOSE:  This course is designed to enhance awareness regarding compassion fatigue. Compassion fatigue is the emotional and physical exhaustion that can result from prolonged exposure to others’ suffering.  It often affects those in the helping professions, such as healthcare providers. Unlike burnout, which stems from excessive workload and stress, compassion fatigue arises from the deep empathy required in helping professions, leading to decreased resilience, emotional withdrawal, and even questioning one’s sense of purpose. This course content goes beyond surface-level self-care clichés to explore what true, sustainable self-care looks like in daily practice for healthcare providers.

INTENDED AUDIENCE:  Nurses, EMS Providers, Social Workers and other Healthcare Providers

OBJECTIVES:  Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  • Define compassion fatigue and how it can impact healthcare providers.
  • Discuss symptoms of compassion fatigue in the healthcare setting.
  • Explain how to integrate self-awareness, boundary-setting, and intentional recovery strategies into healthcare provider routines.
  • Review strategies such as micro-moments of mindfulness, practical stress-regulation techniques, and ways to replenish emotional reserves without guilt within the healthcare setting.
  • Discuss how healthcare providers can sustain their passion for helping others while safeguarding their own well-being by addressing both individual and organizational approaches to preventing compassion fatigue.
