PURPOSE:
This program will update the knowledge and skills of current BLS instructors based on AHA guidelines and curriculum.
INTENDED AUDIENCE:
Healthcare professionals responsible for conducting BLS programming. Pre-requisites:
- Must have a current BLS Instructor card; no grace period is allowed.
- Must have documentation of teaching a minimum of 4 BLS courses a year for the last two years.
- Must be aligned and have active status with an AHA Training Center.
OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
- Instruct a group on practice-while-watching the video.
- Successfully evaluate another instructor candidate while correctly using the skills testing checklist.
- Successfully remediate another instructor candidate.
- Demonstrate CPR skills according to American Heart Association standards.

The American Heart Association strongly promotes knowledge and proficiency in BLS, ACLS, and PALS and has developed instructional materials for this purpose. Use of these materials in an educational course does not represent course sponsorship by the American Heart Association. Any fees charged for such a course, except for a portion of fees needed for AHA course material, do not represent income to the Association.

REGISTRATION:
Participants must pre-register two weeks prior to class. Spencer Hospital employees register via Healthstream. Non employees register by calling 264-6117, or send registration form to Human Resource Development department.
FEES:
No registration fee for employees of Spencer Hospital with HRD approval to attend. For nonemployees & Spencer Hospital employees without HRD approval to attend: $145. Those that have access to a current AHA BLS Instructor Manual: $95. Course Fee includes: Healthcare Provider Instructor Manual. Fee does not include: Heartsaver First Aid CPR AED Instructor Manual which may be purchased for an additional fee of $70 from HRD.
CANCELLATION:
A full refund (minus a $90 handling fee) is given if cancellation notice is received less than one week prior to class. No refund if less than 24 hours notice is given. Spencer Hospital reserves the right to cancel this program if there is insufficient enrollment. In this event, every attempt will be made to notify enrollees prior to the event.

CONTINUING EDUCATION:
NURSES: 4.0 contact hours will be awarded by IBON approved provider #14 - Spencer Hospital.
EMS’s: No CEH’s will be awarded for this course.
Participants must attend the entire program to receive continuing education credit. Participants may only use a BLS Instructor Certification course once during their license renewal period.
This program has been planned and implemented in accordance with 655 IAC, chapter 5, through Spencer Hospital, Iowa Board of Nursing approved provider #14
