PALS Renewal Class

PURPOSE:

The functional survival of critically ill and injured children is influenced by the provision of timely and appropriate pediatric emergency care in both the prehospital and hospital environments.  In this course, participants will learn a series of skills to be performed sequentially to assess, support, or restore effective ventilation and circulation to a child with respiratory or cardiorespiratory arrest.

INTENDED AUDIENCE:

Nurses, Paramedics and any other Healthcare provider who cares for acutely ill or injured children.

LEARNING OUTCOMES:

Participants will demonstrate knowledge of PALS by performing in various team roles including team leader in a mega code. Participants will apply the AHA recommended algorithms to manage PALS emergencies.

Participants will demonstrate their understanding of PALS by successfully completing the post test with a score of 84% or greater.

OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  1. Understand and perform the systematic approach to pediatric assessment of a seriously ill or injured child, including the primary, secondary and diagnostic tests assessments.
  2. Utilize the Evaluate-Identify-Intervene approach to decision making.
  3. Recognize and manage a child in respiratory distress or failure and/or compensated or hypotensive shock.
  4. Recognize and manage a child with life-threatening bradyarrhythmia, tachyarrhythmia or arrest rhythm.
  5. Describe the key elements of effective resuscitation team behaviors and explain why the foundation of successful resuscitation includes both the mastery of basic skills and effective team dynamics.
  6. Discuss and apply PEWS (Pediatric Early Warning Signs) protocol. 

REGISTRATION:

Participants must pre-register one week prior to class.  Spencer Hospital employees register via Healthstream.  Non employees register by calling

264-6117, or send form to Human Resource Development dept at Spencer Hospital.  

Pre-course reading/preparation is mandatory for this course, no drop-in registration is permitted.

PRECOURSE REQUIREMENT:

Log on to the AHA Student Website:  eLearning.heart.org to complete the pre-course self-assessment.  Once on the AHA student website, click on courses, Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and select the PALS Precourse Self-Assessment.  Complete the pre test prior to class with a passing score of 70% or greater.  Print a copy of the online certificate of completion and bring it to class with you.  If you fail to complete this prior to class you will need to reschedule for a later class date.

FEES:

No registration fee for employees of Spencer Hospital who have Director approval to attend. 

Non-employees & Spencer Hospital employees without Director approval to attend; $155 (fee includes PALS text). $95 if student has access to the PALS text.

CANCELLATION:

A full refund (minus a $75 handling fee) is given if cancellation notice is received less than one week prior to class. No refund if less than 24 hour notice is given. 

Spencer Hospital reserves the right to cancel.

CONTINUING EDUCATION:

NURSES:  4.0 Contact Hours will be awarded by IBON provider #14 - Spencer Hospital.

EMT’s: CEH’s will be offered through CAPCE (Commission on Accreditation of Pre-Hospital Continuing Education)

Participants must attend the entire program and meet the course criteria to receive continuing education credit.  Participants may only use a PALS Certification course once during their license renewal period.

This program has been planned and implemented in accordance with 655 IAC, chapter 5, through Spencer Hospital, Iowa Board of Nursing approved provider #14
