PURPOSE:
This program is conducted to update healthcare providers in the skills and principles of ACLS as defined by the American Heart Association. The ACLS-EP Course is designed to challenge students & an interactive format is used requiring a basic current understanding of ACLS algorithms & practice skills. Course emphasis is an advanced level.
INTENDED AUDIENCE:
Any healthcare provider who has completed an ACLS Provider Course: Physicians, RN’s, Paramedics, Respiratory Therapists

LEARNING OUTCOMES:
Participants will demonstrate knowledge of ACLS by performing in various team roles including team leader in a mega code.
Participants will apply the AHA recommended algorithms to manage ACLS emergencies.
Participants will demonstrate their understanding of ACLS by successfully completing the post test with a score of 84% or greater.
Participants will demonstrate knowledge of complex cardiovascular, respiratory/metabolic, toxicologic and other emergencies by expanding on core ACLS guidelines using critical thinking and decision making strategies applied during case based scenarios.
OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
- Describe the ACLS Experience Provider approach.
- Describe the Primary & Secondary ABCD Surveys.
- Describe the 5 Quadrads approach.
- Demonstrate the Primary ABCD Survey in scenarios:
a. Basic adult life support by one rescuer
b. Application & use of an automated external defibrillator
- Discuss the skills of the Secondary ABCD Survey:
a. Describe tracheal intubation
b. Describe a technique for intravascular access
c. Identify the cardiac rhythm & select rhythm-appropriate medications
d. Describe the assessment-management approach to use during the Primary & Secondary ABCD Surveys
e. Develop a differential diagnosis for possible reversible causes of cardiac arrest
f. Describe the 6 H’s & 6 T’s mnemonic that helps expand the differential diagnosis
- Describe how experienced ACLS providers must modify the Primary & Secondary ABCD Surveys with specific critical actions for the ACLS-EP cases.
- Describe the prearrest management for cases selected from the clinical emergencies listed & describe the arrest management.
REGISTRATION:
Participants must pre-register one week prior to class. Spencer Hospital employees register via Healthstream. Non employees register by calling 264-6117, or send form to Human Resource Development dept at Spencer Hospital. Late registration is permissible, only if space is available; no drop-in attendance is allowed.
PRECOURSE REQUIREMENT:
Log on to the AHA Student Website: eLearning.heart.org to complete the pre-course self-assessment. Once on the AHA student website, click on courses, Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) and select the ACLS Precourse Self-Assessment. Complete the pre test prior to class with a passing score of 70% or greater. Print a copy of the online certificate of completion and bring it to class with you. If you fail to complete this prior to class you will need to reschedule for a later class date.
FEES:
No registration fee for employees of Spencer Hospital who have director approval to attend. $190 for non-employees - (includes ACLS EP manual). $110 for students that have access to the required text.
CANCELLATION:
A full refund (minus a $85 handling fee) is given if cancellation notice is received less than one week prior to class. No refund if less than 24 hour notice is given. Spencer Hospital reserves the right to cancel this program if there is insufficient enrollment. In this event, every attempt will be made to notify enrollees prior to the event.
CONTINUING EDUCATION:
NURSES: 4.0 Contact Hours will be awarded by IBON provider #14 - Spencer Hospital.
EMT’s: CEH’s will be issued through CAPCE (Commission on Accreditation of Pre-Hospital Continuing Education)
Participants must attend the entire program and meet the course criteria to receive continuing education credit. Participants may only use an ACLS Certification course once during their license renewal period.
