Celebrating National Nutrition Month: Food Connects Us

posted by Darlene DeWitt, MS, RD, LD on Monday, March 3, 2025

March is National Nutrition Month, an annual campaign started in 1973 to focus attention on making informed food choices and developing healthful eating habits. The theme this year is “Food Connects Us,” highlighting the connections between our food, culture, families, friends, environment, and communities. Our health, memories, traditions, seasons, and access all impact our relationship with food. While these factors have influence over the foods we eat, the foods we eat also have influence on our health.

Each week in March, we will focus on a different aspect of this theme, providing insights and resources to help strengthen your connection with food.

Week 1: Connecting with Food

One of the best ways to build a strong relationship with food is by learning new cooking skills, exploring where your food comes from, or learning about local community resources such as SNAP, WIC, or local food banks.

Consider looking into a community garden plot or visiting the farmers market this summer!

Week 2: Connecting with a Nutrition Expert

Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) Day falls on the second Wednesday in March and recognizes the hard work and dedication of dietitians across the country. RDNs are the nutrition experts, who serve as valuable resources for communities by helping individuals make healthier food choices.

Join us in thanking Spencer Hospital’s Registered Dietitians who are committed to helping out patients and staff by providing education and support!

Week 3: Exploring the Connection Between Food & Culture

Food is a universal language that connects people across cultures. We encourage you to embrace new flavors, try recipes from different cultures, and enjoy meals with family or friends.

Try hosting a family meal or experiment with a new recipe!

Week 4: Building a Connection Across All Stages of Life

Our nutritional needs change as we age, making it essential to adapt our diets accordingly. Also, we want to emphasize the importance of sustainable food sources for both personal and environmental health. Balanced meals play a key role in maintaining good health at every stage of life.

Try incorporating a plant-based meal into your routine once a week!

Join Us in Celebrating National Nutrition Month!

Throughout March, let's focus on embracing the ways that food connects us all by exploring each week’s insights and resources available.
