Spencer Hospital is proud to announce that Lisa Nielsen, a dedicated radiation oncology nurse at Abben Cancer Center, has been recognized as a 2025 Great Iowa Nurse. This honor is awarded to nurses across the state who go above and beyond to provide compassionate, high-quality care while also serving as leaders and mentors in their field.
Lisa Nielsen exemplifies the qualities of a Great Iowa Nurse through her commitment to patient care, collaboration with colleagues, and mentorship of fellow healthcare professionals. She has made an incredible impact on the lives of her patients and has played a crucial role in enhancing cancer care services at Abben Cancer Center.
“Lisa is an outstanding nurse whose dedication and compassion are evident in everything she does,” said Brenda Tiefenthaler, President of Spencer Hospital. “She is truly an asset to the Abben Cancer Center team, and we are incredibly fortunate to have her caring for our patients at Spencer Hospital. This recognition is a testament to the exceptional care she provides every day and so well deserved.”
Lisa began her nursing career after graduating from Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge. She initially transitioned her nursing career to oncology at Abben Cancer Center a decade ago. She first served in the medical oncology department before moving into radiation oncology. In this role, she collaborates daily with physicians, radiation technologists, and medical oncology nurses, ensuring seamless and comprehensive patient care.
“Twelve years ago, I lost my mother to cancer. That loss ignited my passion for oncology,” Lisa shared. “I strive every day to make a difference in someone’s life—whether by caring for them during a single visit or building a relationship throughout their journey. I want patients to know I care and that I’m here for them every step of the way. Hopefully, I can add a smile to their day!”
Lisa’s recognition as a 2025 Great Iowa Nurse is supported by heartfelt nominations from her fellow nurses in oncology. Meg Holle, one of her nominators, emphasized Lisa’s dedication to patient care, stating, “Lisa goes above and beyond every day for her patients. She makes every patient that walks through the door feel seen and cared for while providing exceptional care every time. Because we are a rural cancer center, she not only provides top-notch care here but also navigates care for patients who require outside resources. She is a true asset to rural cancer care in Northwest Iowa.”
Emily Grange, echoed these sentiments in her nomination, noting, “Lisa is caring, compassionate, and a great role model in the nursing profession. She truly cares for each and every patient she encounters. She advocates for all patients to receive the best care possible and is always eager to learn new advancements in oncology to improve patient outcomes. She is a joy to work with, and our oncology department is so lucky to have her as part of our team!”
A virtual ceremony honoring the 2025 Great Iowa Nurses will be held at a later date, with further details to be announced. Spencer Hospital and Abben Cancer Center celebrate Lisa Nielsen’s well-deserved recognition and extend their gratitude for her dedication to providing exceptional oncology care.
