Spencer Hospital joins Mayor Steve Bomgaars in recognizing Hyperbaric Awareness Week, from May 19th to 25th, 2024. This week is dedicated to raising awareness about hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and its benefits for a variety of medical conditions.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a proven treatment option for wounds, infections, or injuries that have not responded to standard treatments. HBOT has emerged as a treatment option for patients who suffer from late radiation tissue injury. HBOT helps patients by stimulating growth of new blood vessels following radiation-induced damage.
“Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is an effective treatment that can significantly improve healing and patient outcomes,” says Brenda Tiefenthaler, President/CEO at Spencer Hospital. “We are proud to offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy services to the community in our Wound Care Clinic.”
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy involves exposing patients to 100% oxygen in a pressurized environment. This increased pressure allows more oxygen to dissolve in the blood plasma, delivering a higher concentration of oxygen to tissues throughout the body. HBOT can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including:
- Diabetic wounds of lower extremities
- Chronic refractory osteomyelitis, unresponsive to conventional treatment
- Radiation injuries to tissue & bone
- Necrotizing infections
- Compromised skin grafts & skin flaps
- Acute peripheral arterial insufficiency
- Acute traumatic peripheral ischemia
- Crush injuries & suturing of severed limbs
- cancer
- diabetes
- hyperbaric medicine
- wound care
