Spencer Hospital staff recently surprised Dr. David Keith with the news that he will receive the prestigious Iowa Hospital Association Hospital Hero Award at the upcoming Iowa Hospital Association Annual Meeting on October 9. This honor recognizes Dr. Keith’s exceptional dedication and unwavering compassion as a healthcare provider, a commitment highlighted in his nomination by peers.
Dr. Keith is known for redefining the image of a care provider, often donning everything from a traditional white coat to fun scrubs, and even a kilt. His versatility extends beyond medicine; he serves as a doula, storyteller, and often serenading laboring mothers with his musical talents. In the Emergency Department, he excels in critical situations, a skill honed through medical missions and mentorship roles. His active participation in various hospital committees and willingness to take on diverse responsibilities, such as officiating weddings during the pandemic, further demonstrate his commitment to excellence.
Upon receiving the surprise announcement, Dr. Keith expressed his gratitude, saying, “Words cannot express how grateful I was being surrounded by a room full of my work family and my lovely wife.” He shared that he initially thought he was attending a meeting about a pet project, only to be met with a surprise celebration from over 30 colleagues.
With 11 years at Avera Medical Group Spencer and Spencer Hospital, Dr. Keith reflected on his journey and the deep connections he has formed within the community. “I am just another woven thread in this amazing farm-bred town,” he noted. His heartfelt dedication to serving others is evident in everything he does, from delivering babies to comforting patients at the end of life. Above all, Dr. Keith is recognized for treating every individual with compassion, addressing not only their physical health but also their emotional and spiritual needs.
